Supply chain management involves planning and coordinating the activities of organizations across the supply chain. Supply chains consist of heterogeneous subsystems with complex relationships, requiring collective effort and constraint based optimization. It consists of procuring raw materials, acquiring orders from customers, assembling the product, managing inventory and delivering the finished goods. A key function is managing complex and dynamic supply and demand networks. Efficient management of the supply chain is becoming more and more critical in today’s economy. In a time of shortening product life cycles and competitive markets, it is necessary to consider the complete scope of supply chain management, from supplier of raw materials, through factories and warehouses, to demand in a store for finished product. In todays industrial world, manufacturing enterprises increasingly find that they must rely on effective supply chain management, to compete in the global market and networked economy. With e-commerce on the rise and annual worldwide supply chain transactions in trillions of dollars, the potential impact of performance improvements is tremendous.
